AYP In-School Coordinator

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. The IHPS mission is “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships” and the vision is “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. Presently, IHPS is a Global Fund Subrecipient (SR) under The Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), tasked to implement the “Prevention programs for Adolescents and Young People (AYP), in and out of school” with a specific focus on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), Adolescent Boys and Young Men (ABYM) and Male Sexual Partners (MSPs) in Mbombela Subdistrict in Mpumalanga Province from April 2025 – September 2025. As such, IHPS seeks to recruit the position outlined below, based in Mbombela Subdistrict.

IHPS has a zero-tolerance approach to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (SEAH) of any person, child or adult, involved with its programs. The IHPS PSEAH policy outlines its commitment towards SEAH.

Overall Responsibility

The In-School Coordinator is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring, and reporting of the in-school Adolescent and Youth Program (AYP) within the designated sub district. This role ensures that program activities align with relevant government policies and frameworks while fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, including government departments, school management teams, and community leadership.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Lead the implementation of the in-school AYP program to achieve set objectives and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Oversee the mapping of schools and coordination of supportive services.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government departments, school management teams (SMTs, DMTs, SGBs), and community leadership structures.
  • Advocate for and facilitate the integration of the in-school AYP program with Department of Basic Education (DBE) policies, such as the HIV/TB/STI Policy and Integrated School Health Policy (ISHP).
  • Work closely with the AYP Program M&E Manager to ensure timely collection, validation, reporting, and utilization of program-related data.
  • Support in-school AYP program staff in using data management systems.
  • Assess capacity gaps and provide training, mentoring, coaching, and supportive supervision to in-school AYP program staff.
  • Conduct on-site data verification and participate in routine Data Quality Assessments (DQAs) to ensure high-quality program reporting and performance tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with donor and organizational requirements, including grant management, financial reporting, and documentation.
  • Represent the in-school AYP program in relevant district and local leadership forums, advocating for programmatic priorities and resources.
  • Grant Compliance & Close-Out: Oversee and ensure compliance with donor requirements and organizational policies during the grant close-out process, including financial reconciliation, reporting, and documentation of program achievements.
  • Team Management & Accountability: Manage and hold teams accountable for their work, ensuring that clear expectations and responsibilities are set and met.
  • Performance Monitoring & Feedback: Conduct weekly performance meetings to assess progress, provide feedback, and address any challenges, ensuring the continuous success and alignment of the program with its objectives.
  • Assume any other duties as assigned by the Program Manager, and IHPS Senior Management.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree in social work, Education, Psychology, Social Sciences, or an equivalent qualification recognized by SAQA.
  • Current registration with a relevant regulatory body/authority (where applicable).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a management or supervisory role.
  • Experience working within adolescent and youth programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Department of Basic Education policies.
  • Strong experience engaging with various stakeholders and participating in multi-stakeholder forums.

Travel Requirements
Local travel is inherent to the position.
