NIMART Nurse (Outreach) – MSM & TG
The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. The IHPS mission is “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships”, with a vision to achieve “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. Currently, IHPS is a Global Fund (GF) Subrecipient (SR) under the Aurum Institute, tasked to implement the “Comprehensive HIV Prevention Programmes for Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender People (TG) and their sexual partners across all five districts in Limpopo Province viz. Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg from 01 December 2025 to 31 March 2028. As such, IHPS seeks to recruit the positions outlined below, based, in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province

Overall Responsibility
The NIMART Nurse (Outreach) is responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality HIV prevention, treatment, and care services to men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender (TG) populations through outreach and facility-based platforms. The role focuses on the initiation, management, and monitoring of PrEP, ART, and PEP, supported by integrated TB screening, sexual health services, and differentiated models of care.
The position aims to increase access, retention, and clinical outcomes for MSM and TG clients by delivering non-judgmental, affirming, and rights-based clinical services, strengthening linkages to care, and supporting continuity of treatment in collaboration with the Department of Health (DoH), community partners, and multidisciplinary teams. The NIMART Nurse ensures compliance with national guidelines, SOPs, and infection prevention standards, while contributing to programme reporting, quality improvement, and stakeholder engagement to support HIV and TB epidemic control efforts.
Key Performance Areas:
PrEP, ART, and PEP Service Delivery
- Provide comprehensive PrEP, ART, and PEP services to MSM and TG clients in outreach and facility-based settings in accordance with national guidelines.
- Screen clients for PrEP eligibility, initiate PrEP, provide adherence counselling, manage side effects, and conduct routine follow-up and monitoring.
- Initiate, manage, and monitor antiretroviral therapy (ART) under NIMART, including baseline assessments, regimen selection, re-scripting, and management of stable patients.
- Provide PEP services, including risk assessment, timely initiation, adherence support, follow-up testing, and completion counselling.
- Monitor PrEP, ART, and PEP clients for adverse events, treatment response, and retention in care, escalating complex cases as per referral protocols.
- Interpret relevant laboratory investigations (e.g. HIV tests, creatinine, VL, CD4, HB, LFTs) to inform PrEP, ART, and PEP clinical decisions.
- Support U=U messaging, risk-reduction counselling, and differentiated service delivery models tailored to MSM and TG populations.
Clinical Services and Outreach Support
- Perform routine blood draws and ensure correct labelling, handling, storage, and transportation of specimens in line with laboratory and biosafety standards.
- Monitor and record patient vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, temperature, and random glucose levels, and respond appropriately to abnormal findings.
- Provide on-site clinical support during outreach and facility-based consultations, including sexual health screening and syndromic management of STIs.
- Support HIV Testing Services (HTS) teams with clinical oversight, HIV and TB health education, and reinforcement of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
- Collaborate with Programme staff and Department of Health (DoH) colleagues in TB screening, diagnosis, and implementation of TUTT and LF-LAM protocols.
Quality Assurance, Data, and Compliance
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), NIMART guidelines, occupational health and safety requirements, and infection prevention and control standards.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential clinical records, registers, and specimen collection logs in accordance with data quality and confidentiality requirements.
- Identify and report clinical, environmental, and operational risks, and implement or recommend corrective actions where required.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Reporting
- Participate in multidisciplinary case management meetings to support continuity of care for MSM and TG clients with complex clinical or psychosocial needs.
- Compile and submit accurate monthly clinical statistics, narrative reports, and ad hoc reports as required by programme management and funders.
- Strengthen collaborative relationships with health facilities, referral institutions, community-based organisations, and MSM & TG community partners.
Representation and Administration
- Perform general administrative and programme-related duties as delegated to support effective outreach service delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (BCMP) degree/Clinical Associate and current registration with HPCSA or other relevant bodies as applicable or
- Professional nurse (PN) with NQF 7 qualification in Primary Health Care (PHC) plus dispensing licence.
- NIMART trained and certified PN.
- License and current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Current registration with SANC.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ nursing experience with a focus on HIV prevention, counselling, and management.
- Experience in HIV/AIDS, TB, public health, and health systems strengthening.
- Strong knowledge of DoH systems and HIV guidelines.
- Understanding of biomedical and behavioural HIV prevention interventions.
- Valid South African driver’s licence.
- Experience working with key populations is an advantage.
Competencies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Command of other official local languages (multilingual) would be an added advantage.
- HR management and capacity development skills incl. solid understanding of SA labour laws.
- Sound problem solving and decision-making skills
- Effective time management, organising and coordination skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
Travel Requirements
Local travel is inherent to the position.
