Peer Educator

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. The IHPS mission is “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships,” and the vision is “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. Presently, IHPS is a Global Fund Subrecipient (SR) under Networking HIV and AIDS Community of Southern Africa (NACOSA), tasked to implement the “My Journey Adolescents and Young People (AYP) Programme”, in Mbombela Subdistrict, Mpumalanga Province, from January 2026 to March 2028. Overall Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Social Worker, the Peer Educator will conduct community-based outreach, deliver youth-centered health education, and mobilize AYP to access HIV, SRH, and GBV services under the “My Journey” programme, serving as a trusted peer and role model.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Conduct community outreach to identify and engage AYP.
  • Deliver interactive health education sessions on HIV prevention, SRH, mental health, and human rights.
  • Support risk assessments using standardized tools and refer high-risk individuals to clinical and psychosocial services.
  • Distribute condoms, lubricants, and IEC materials, guiding correct use.
  • Facilitate referrals for HIV testing, PrEP initiation, ART, STI/TB screening, and post-violence care.
  • Provide basic peer counselling and adherence support for clients on PrEP or ART.
  • Capture beneficiary data using mobile devices and support digital tracking.
  • Participate in community campaigns, dialogues, and human rights awareness events.
  • Follow up on referrals to ensure service linkage and continuity of care.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by IHPS senior management.

Qualifications

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent to NQF 4 with a minimum of 1 year of experience in peer education 
  • Peer Education certificate or equivalent qualification
