Professional Nurse/Registered Nurse Mentor

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. IHPS was established with a mission “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships” and the vision is to ensure “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. IHPS is a current Global Fund (GF) Subrecipient (SR) under the National Department of Health (NDoH), tasked to implement the Tuberculosis (TB) Program in the Johannesburg (JHB) Health District in Gauteng Province (GP), Dr Kenneth Kaunda (KK) District in the North West (NW) Province and Frances Baard District in Northern Cape starting October 2025 ending March 2028. As such, IHPS seeks to recruit for the following positions.

Full Time

Overall Responsibility

The Registered Nurse Mentor will provide onsite training and mentorship to facility Staff and mentor Mothers on VTP and MCWH-related topics. Additionally, the role demands a person who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, willing to travel, and passionate about driving positive change. 

Key Performance Areas:
  • Leading staff management to oversee Mentor Mothers programme to ensure VTP is running effectively.
  • Conduct monthly meetings or as needed with Staff to determine progress issues and recommendations to optimize integrated service delivery. 
  • Review and manage the performance of mentor mothers once a month or as needed.
  • Ensure synergy between all relevant components of VTP; MCWH;SRH;EPI,IMCI, and PrEP are operating effectively.
  • Collaborate with district training center to conduct training.
  • Capacity building of the Professional Nurses and any category as needed.
  • Offer one-on-one mentorship to Professional nurses and other categories as needed.
  • Collaborate with M&E Officers to develop monthly data reviews.
  • Participate in District meetings and engagements such as MCWH, HAST, Operation Phutuma Nerve centers, QIP, and Global Alliance initiatives, etc.
  • Collaborate with M&E Officers to develop monthly data reviews.
  • Conduct Weekly mentorship in facilities.
  • Compile a Monthly report and send to the Line Manager.
Minimum Requirements
  • Basic R425 qualification (i.e., diploma/degree in nursing) or equivalent qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse
  • Registered Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • A minimum of 7 Years appropriate/recognisable experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing, Community, or Primary Health care.
  • 3 years’ experience in Mentorship and Staff Management
  • NIMART &PMTCT Training
  • Training in IMCI; SRH;PC 101; PrEP
  • Experience working in the HAST programmes will be advantageous
  • Mentorship
  • Willingness to travel frequently within the subdistrict (Valid driver’s license required)
Competency
  • Clinical expertise in Mentorship & Training
  • Proficiency in basic Excel, Word & PowerPoint
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing  
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Flexibility and cultural sensitivity when working with diverse communities and facilities
Technical experience
  • Problem-solving and the ability to use initiative in interpreting data
