TB Focal Nurse

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. IHPS was established with a mission “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships” and the vision is to ensure “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. IHPS is a current Global Fund (GF) Subrecipient (SR) under the National Department of Health (NDoH), tasked to implement the Tuberculosis (TB) Program in the Johannesburg (JHB) Health District in Gauteng Province (GP), Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in the North West (NW) Province and Frances Baard in Northern Cape starting October 2025 ending March 2028. As such, IHPS seeks to recruit for the positions outlined below, supporting JHB Health District, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, and Frances Baard Health District.

Full Time

Overall Responsibility

The role TB Focal nurse is to coordinate TB activities at a facility level. He/she will coordinate, deliver services, facilitate prevention of TB activities, improve case finding, linkage to care, and retention to care at PHCs, hospitals, and at decentralised DR-TB sites. They will work closely with the medical officer and NMDR-TB NURSE to implement these activities.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Improve quality standards for recording, reporting of TB data in the facilities.
  • Register patients who are diagnosed with TB in the facilities.
  • Coordinate the down referral of patients diagnosed in the hospital and follow up to confirm that they reached the clinic and that close contacts are traced.
  • Supervise and monitor the capturing of TB data in the information system by the data capture.
  • Collate the data in the TB identification register for reporting.
  • Coordinate TB activities in the facilities, in close collaboration with facility managers and subdistrict TB coordinators. 
  • Conduct other activities as assigned by the management. 
  • Compile monthly/ quarterly reports in collaboration with subdistrict TB/HIV managers and the IHPS DPM.  
  • Implement quality improvement activities at the facility and subdistrict level. 
  • Work closely with information officers at the facility and subdistrict level. 
  • Support TB and HIV care and Infection prevention and control activities
  • Promote the provision of treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI) in eligible patients.
  • Map their feeder clinics and create and maintain a database
  • Participate in district quarterly TB and data review meetings.
  • Coordinate TB specific training based on the need

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (B. Cur).
  • Qualification in Community health nursing or Primary Health Care will be an advantage
  • TB/HIV Policies, SOPs, and guidelines
  • Minimum of three years’ practical experience in nursing, post registration
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse

Technical skills and experience

  • Minimum of 3 years working experience in the public health care sector  
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in clinical management of TB and HIV 
  • Sound knowledge of TB/HIV data tools and systems
  • Sound leadership and people management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages
  •  Verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license
