Why Young People?
- HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among adolescent young people (AYP) aged 15-24yrs in Africa
- 50% of 15-19yrs AYP living with HIV globally are in just 6 countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, India, Mozambique and Tanzania.
- Current estimation – 2000+ new infections per week among adolescent girls and young women in South Africa
- Risk factors include: early sexual debut, age-disparate relationships, transactional sex, gender based violence, unplanned pregnancy, dropping out of school and substance misuse
Aim
- To reduce the incidence of HIV among adolescent girls and young women in high- and moderate-incidence districts by increasingTargeting AYP aged 15-24 years:
> HIV testing
> Consistent condom use
> PrEP products use
> Retention of HIV positive young women in care
Objectives
Conduct HIV testing services
Provide condoms and lubricant
Provide sexual education and information
Provide PrEP choices for high-risk young people
Health interventions as per needs assessment
AYP Components
Cross-cutting activities aimed at increasing uptake and access to services include:
• Community demand creation and mobilisation
• Digital demand creation and youth-friendly information
• Links to other available support services such Thuthuzela Care Centres and referrals to statutory child protection, key populations programmes, psycho-social services, economic strengthening initiatives,etc.
• Advocacy and policy reform to advance the rights of girls and women
