Human Rights Ambassador/Reactor

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. The IHPS mission is “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships,” and the vision is “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. Presently, IHPS is a Global Fund Subrecipient (SR) under Networking HIV and AIDS Community of Southern Africa (NACOSA), tasked to implement the “My Journey Adolescents and Young People (AYP) Programme”, in Mbombela Subdistrict, Mpumalanga Province, from January 2026 to March 2028. Overall Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Paralegal, the Human Rights Ambassador/Reactor will document human rights violations, provide basic trauma support, and facilitate referrals for AGYW and key populations within the “My Journey” programme.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Conduct community dialogues and legal literacy sessions on human rights and GBV.
  • Document and report human rights violations using the IMS system.
  • Provide initial trauma containment and refer survivors to appropriate services.
  • Support survivors in opening police cases and accessing medical care.
  • Participate in district stakeholder meetings and human rights forums.
  • Compile monthly and quarterly reports on violations and programme activities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Participate in IHPS-facilitated legal and human rights capacity-building activities 
  • Maintain accurate case tracking and outcome data.
  • Prepare monthly case summaries and trends reports and flag recurring rights violations for programmatic or advocacy follow-up.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by IHPS senior management

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4
  • Recognized short courses in human rights, legal rights awareness, or access to justice (will be an advantage).

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent facilitation skills
  • Experience in human rights or programming in the public health or HIV field
  • Computer literate in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent report-writing skills 
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and manage caseloads effectively
  • Good interpersonal skills, including being a team player 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and a command of other official local languages (multilingual) would be an added advantage.
