TB Support Officer

The Institute of Health Programs and Systems (IHPS) is a South African non-profit company (NPC) born out of the PEPFAR CDC Track 1 transition of the ICAP, Columbia University, Multi-country AIDS Program (MCAP) in South Africa in 2010. IHPS was established with a mission “to strengthen health and development systems through program implementation and partnerships” and, the vision is to ensure “optimal and sustainable health and development outcomes”. IHPS is a current Global Fund (GF) Subrecipient (SR) under the National Department of Health (NDoH), tasked to implement the Tuberculosis (TB) Program in the Johannesburg (JHB) Health District in Gauteng Province (GP) and Kenneth Kaunda District in the Northwest (NW) Province starting April 2022 ending March 2025. As such, IHPS seeks to recruit for the position outlined below, to be based at Johannesburg Health District Office in the Gauteng Province.
                  Preference will be given to candidate who resides in region A, B, C, D, E, F and G, within Johannesburg Health districts

TB Support Officer JHB

Overall Responsibility
The TSO position is responsible to increase TB case finding by providing screening and testing of high-risk groups. Responsible to trace and link to care people diagnose with TB, but not started on treatment and people who interrupted treatment. Improve treatment adherence by educating and counselling TB patients. Able to find persons with undiagnosed TB in communities. Improve treatment outcomes by ensuring adherence to treatment and retention in care.

Key Performance Areas:
  • Conduct TB screening and specimen collection on close contacts of TB patients and other high-risk groups at community level. 
  • Refer those who test positive and sick household contacts to the nearest clinic.  
  • Conduct tracing of people (Including TB patients) who miss clinic appointments.
  • Conduct door-to-door outreach, 
  • Support Mobile DCXR outreach to increase demand for TB screening services
  • Conduct patient education and counselling for TB patients.
  • Support adherence clubs to enhance adherence and retention in care for TB patients
  • Report daily to the supervisor (ENA)
  • Capturing daily activities on M&E tools
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Certification as a Community Health Care Worker will be an advantage
  • Experience in health promotion and health education
  • Ability to operate a mobile device
